Children’s Yoga: A Lifeline for the Next Generation
A Wake-Up Call on the State of Young Minds Today
Recently, I watched the Netflix series Adolescence, which opens with a young boy being arrested for the murder of a classmate. It gave me goosebumps. Not long after, a similar real-life story appeared on BBC News, and the parallel was unsettling. It drove home, with painful clarity, just how delicate young minds can be when faced by life’s pressures. What could possibly be going on in a young kid’s mind to even fathom such violent thoughts and then action it? It’s heartbreaking – and it’s one of the reasons why I feel so strongly about sharing Hatha Yoga with young people as a powerful tool for mental and emotional well-being.
Experiencing the Power of Hatha Yoga at Sadhguru’s Ashram
During my six-month Hatha Yoga teacher training at Sadhguru’s ashram in India, I witnessed how these ancient yogic practices could transform the minds of fully grown adults. Alongside 200 other trainees, I experienced this first-hand. On the surface: calmer thoughts, better sleep, higher energy levels, increased strength, and improved flexibility. For many of us, the transformation went even deeper – lasting inner peace, joy beyond words, a fresh perspective on life, and the ability to reach deeper meditative states. It made me wonder – if Hatha Yoga, taught in its purest classical form at Sadhguru’s Isha Yoga Centre could rewire well-established adult minds, what wonders could it bring to children whose minds are still developing?
Sadhguru says: “Whatever the external situation might be, if you can maintain an inner balance without any suffering, this is yoga.” To paraphrase, the very essence of Hatha Yoga is to make your body and mind in such a way that you can maintain inner
stability and resilience regardless of what is going on around you. Imagine if
more young people learned Hatha Yoga early in life, gaining the tools to
regulate their emotions, shift their perceptions, and cultivate stability
within. Many of the struggles we see today – especially the extreme cases
depicted in Adolescence – might be
prevented.
Real-World Results: Isha Hatha Children’s Yoga in Schools
This vision isn’t just hopeful – it’s backed by real results. Between 2012 and 2013, through Isha Outreach, Isha Hatha Yoga and Isha Kriya sessions were conducted in 41 rural government schools across Tamil Nadu, focusing on helping students manage exam stress and anxiety (source). These programs led to noticeable improvements in concentration, mental health, and feelings of inner peace.
Following this success, the initiative expanded to 10th and 12th-grade students preparing for high-pressure board exams – reaching over 6,000 students. Students were empowered to take charge of their own well-being through regular practice, leading to clearer thinking, improved focus, and better overall health.
Science Meets Tradition: What Research is Saying
In an online study conducted at the Harvard Medical School, people who practised Isha Kriya daily saw dramatic drops in anxiety and depression symptoms within just two weeks. (source) This is without any other changes to their lifestyle or medication.
Other Hatha Yoga practices taught to the school children – such as Surya Kriya, Patangasana, and Shishupalasana – offered a wide range of physical health benefits, including:
- Strengthening muscles, joints, and ligaments
- Improving cardiovascular function and heart health
- Oxygenating the blood and supporting the respiratory system
- Enhancing digestive and nervous system function, and stimulating the lymphatic system
- Overall conditioning and improved vitality across the body’s systems
One student shared:
“What I learnt from the Isha Yoga class is that here they didn’t tell us how to be peaceful and calm. When our teachers used to say, ‘be calm,’ I wouldn’t listen. But when I entered the yoga class, I just became calm within myself. I came to know about Sadhguru during the program, and I was very happy during the three days. I had never attended any class with this kind of enthusiasm and peace before. I will continue my practices for the next 48 days, twice a day. My sincere gratitude to Sadhguru, and to the teacher for holding this class for us.”
My Experience at Isha Vidya School
After completing my Hatha Yoga teacher training, I had the privilege of conducting review and correction sessions at the Isha Vidya School in Coimbatore. Watching a room full of bright-eyed, curious, and disciplined young people practising Surya Shakti, Nadi Shuddhi, Surya Kriya, and AUM chanting was immensely fulfilling. In breakout sessions with a group of girls, I asked them “How does Yoga make you feel?” I distinctly remember their sharings, that Hatha Yoga had made them feel happier, more confident, and more at ease within themselves. The impact of Yoga for children wasn’t just evident through their words, but the joy and energy that radiated from their young bodies.
Why I Teach Hatha Yoga to Children
For me, there’s no greater joy than witnessing that transformation. Youth is a time of immense possibility – and with the right exposure to Hatha Yoga, we can help shape a generation that’s calmer, more resilient, and more at peace with who they are within.
One of my primary aims through teaching, is to create an opportunity for children to experience Yoga in its most authentic form. Through engaging three-day workshops, children can learn a variety of physical asanas, breathing techniques, and meditation practices to nurture both body and mind – laying the foundation for lifelong health and inner stability.
